A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is fixed to the front surface of a tooth to alter the shape or to improve the appearance. Only a small amount of tooth is removed to enable the veneer to fit without feeling bulky.
Sometimes a layer of composite ( white filling material) will do the same.
Our Dentists will be able to tell you what is the best option to use for your tooth.
If a porcelain veneer is to be constructed two visits will be required.
Dentist will prepare the tooth by removing only a minimal amount of enamel to give enough room for the thickness of the veneer to fit the tooth.
An impression will be taken of the prepared tooth and of the opposing teeth and sent to the laboratory technician along with the shade and any other information they may need to make the veneer.
Temporary coverage will be fitted if needed as often there is only a small amount removed and the tooth will only look slightly different.
In about 2 weeks the veneer is bonded to the tooth using a special adhesive
Veneers can last for many years if looked after. They may chip or break like natural teeth if excessive force is applied to them.
Composite veneers can be constructed up in one visit as your dentist builds them up around the natural tooth. These are mainly used to fill small gaps between teeth or to build up a peg shaped or misshaped tooth.
